Promise Partners Mentoring Collaborative

Promise Partners is a community collaborative comprised of five local entities, the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan, Grand Valley State University, Ferris State University, Cook Library Center, and the Cook Arts Center.

Together the collaborative developed a culturally-responsive “mentorship pipeline” model that provides participants with emotional and academic support. Youth, kindergarten-through college, are matched with peer mentors based on “best-fit” matches (IE: similar background, experiences, and life goals).

Research shows that mentored youth do significantly better than non-mentored youth in the areas of emotional well-being, peer relationships, academic attitudes and grades. To this end, the Promise Partner mentors act as role models to help get students to college, through college, and help prepare them for success after they finish college.

The collaborative piloted its first cohort of 47 pairs in 2015 with seed funding from the Heart of West Michigan United Way.
